I feel incredibly guilty giving this book this rating, as I can't even imagine the hard work that goes into writing a book, but respectfully, I really struggled to stay interested in reading this in the beginning. I think it's probably because I went into this with the expectation that this would be more about their relationships with their dogs. It's not. There is one line here and there, but nothing quite like the title or back of the book suggests.

I don't want to skim over the fact that I LOVED George's story with Poppy and Betty. If it was just George's POV, this would have been a 5 star read. His character arc was exquisite and the banter with Betty was entertaining.

While I appreciate Dan's perspective and his bond with Fitz, a good chunk of his story was very repetitive. So I only really enjoyed Dan's story when I was 200 pages in. The moments with Atticus were my favourite, his character was so well developed.

However, I couldn't connect with Lizzie's story at all. It felt slow and insincere. It makes sense later in the story, but it bothered me enough to want to skim through her pages (although I didn't). I also didn't feel that neither Maud and Lizzie's or Christmas and Lizzie's bond were genuine. It was almost like they were an afterthought.

Overall, I think it's a good read if you don't go into it hoping there'll be a lot about their bonds with the dogs.
