The Little Prince

Proper context: that’s what’s needed to fully absorb the immensely intense, and beautiful nature of this story. Published in 1943, and written whilst Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was in self-exile in the USA from the Nazi occupation of France, this ‘moral allegory’ and deep look into the human condition is moving, heartfelt and gutting. It holds layer upon layer of thought-provoking content open for individual interpretation, which again is easier to decipher when historical context is employed. The gut-wrenching nature of it all is so much more involved when you understand de Saint-Exupéry’s own experiences, and turmoils. The Little Prince’s ascension to his planet can be interpreted perhaps as Antoine’s own desire to transcend Earthly limits and return to his sister — the rose he left behind in France. It’s a beautiful tragedy. This edition is coupled with an essay entitled “Letter to a Hostage” which was dedicated to de Saint-Exupéry’s Jewish friend Leon Werth who remained in France. It’s an excellent historical document that I highly recommend. Leon Werth survived the war, and lived until 1955. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry died in 1944 on a reconnaissance mission. Within this letter he talks about the possibility of going on such a mission. The most meaningful book you must read even if you are a fully grown up. This could give you so many questions regarding relations with your friends or family. How you could cherish what you have free from greed we all always have had deep inside. Once you touch this book and start to flip the pages, you cant stop yourself from thinking of yourself in every possible way :) So amazing work Sanitexupery made for the future generations.
