This book 'The war that saved my life' is a wonderful novel, written by amazing Kimberly Brubaker Bradley and illustrated by Josie Portillo. it is about 11 year old Ada , and her little brother Jamie, who lived in a tiny apartment with their Mam, although she doesn't care at all about her children. What will happen to poor Ada and lonely Jamie when World War Two hits?

Ada lives in an apartment with her horrible Mam. Her brother, Jamie, loves their life, except Ada, not so much. But when they get sent away on a steam train for bombing hazards in London, their lives will be changed forever. When they arrive in an unknown village, they meet a kind young woman named Susan. Susan doesn't want to, but is forced to take the children in . The nice little village that they are in is taking every safety precaution that they can, but even so, Ada still manages to self-teach herself how to ride a beautiful horse named Butter behind their backs. But the day comes that they have to go home to their gruesome apartment. How will Ada make it through living with her careless Mam for a second time?

The four main characters all have very different personalities. Ada is shy and always want to do things herself, Jamie is very energetic and adventurous, Susan cares very much for the children and will do anything to help the broken town, and their Mam just wants to get on with her normal life. This is a very well written that has a lot of thought put into the way a hurt girl at that age would feel and think.

This historical fiction tale has a great storyline and it was a great choice for the author to use a first-person view in this wonderful book, so I give it a solid 5 out of 5 stars for its adventurous and emotional ride, and even a bit of action. I'd suggest this book for 10+, especially for people who like some fun, historical, everyday life themed book. This is one of the best books that I've ever read!

As Ada fights for freedom you can experience a variety of emotions. The author has really brought the story to life from the mind of a girl with a dark background surviving during war. A lovely story that brings tears to your eyes. I would recommend this book if you like story's about a persons life. It also has many exciting parts as Ada explores the world. Show more Show less
